“When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.”

-Alexander Den Heijer

My approach to therapy is integrative or eclectic. Every person has their own story, their own experiences, and their own unique needs in therapy. As I get to know you or your child, we will explore together to find the different styles and techniques you or your child seem to respond to best.

I am currently pursuing certification in Synergetic Play Therapy (SPT) and am on my way to becoming a certified Synergetic Play Therapist in May 2024. I have seen the transformation SPT has already made for my play therapy clients over the past year and am excited to bring this model of play therapy to DFW. Synergetic Play Therapy (2008) is a researched-informed model of play therapy blending the therapeutic power of play with nervous system regulation, interpersonal neurobiology, physics, attachment, mindfulness, and therapist authenticity. It grew from personal experience as well as research in neuroscience, Interpersonal Neurobiology, and attachment theory (see Badenoch, 2008; Porges, 2011; Schore, 1994; Siegel, 1999 for coverage of the ideas behind SPT). Preliminary research suggests that SPT significantly improves emotional tolerance and regulation (Dion & Gray, 2014; Simmons, 2020). More information about SPT can be found on their website here.

I use a neurodiversity-affirming approach, meaning I do not attempt to encourage or teach my clients how to act or seem more conventional while ignoring and suppressing their own needs. Rather than put pressure on the person or child to change themselves to make others comfortable, which often leads to internalized guilt, shame, and resentment; I believe everyone can thrive if their optimal conditions are being met. Through our work together, we will work to discover your individualized needs, or those of your child. I enjoy empowering parents with tools and techniques to better understand their child, improve their relationship, and feel more confident and fair in their parenting skills. I am happy to consult with teachers, school administration, or physicians to coordinate care for you or your child.

I have experienced the importance of the mind-body connection as it relates to mental health in people of all ages. I am trained in teaching yoga, mindfulness, and breathing techniques which have proven to be helpful for those who struggle with anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, and those who have experienced trauma.
